Overview
Learner goals and capabilities

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is the key to career success. WIL is experiential learning at its best. The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at Centennial College believes that students develop and hone their skills when exposed to hands-on learning. By completing a project or participating in virtual placement with an Employer Partner, you are providing our students with the opportunity to start their careers with tremendous momentum.

Special Event Planning students looking for opportunities to showcase their learning through a capstone project will be responsible for planning and executing exciting events for the college community and industry partners. Students will work closely with faculty supervisors, college staff and industry partners during their project.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

The final project deliverable will be based on changes that need to be implemented in your organization. Your deliverable could include, but it is not limited, to the following elements:

  • Event Proposals
  • Critical Paths
  • Market/Event Research
  • Event Operations Plans
  • Event Marketing Plans
  • Social Media Content Calendars
  • Event Budgets/Forecasting
  • Event Review and Post-Event Reports

We are open to group projects for 2-4 students as well as independent projects/roles.

The time commitment is an approximation and are happy to discuss projects that require more or less hours.

Project Examples

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:

  • Propose solutions to special event issues by researching industry standards and best practices.
  • Contribute to the development of special event proposals and plans to satisfy the needs of stakeholders.
  • Ensure a safe and sustainable event environment to reduce risk and liability to clients and guests.
  • Produce event documentation using industry specific software in order to support the execution of an event.
  • Interact with clients and industry partners as a contributing member of an event team by using professionalism, respect and inclusivity.
  • Adapt to the challenges of the workplace and event industry by reflecting on personal strengths, experiences and growth in professional life.
  • Perform an inspection of an event environment while taking into consideration the needs of stakeholders.
  • Deliver a pitch to stakeholders using communication and presentation skills appropriate to the industry environment.
