Overview
- Learner goals and capabilities
-
Work with experienced engineering project managers with international experience to develop a project management plan for a project of your choosing. Brought to you by ACCES Employment and Ryerson University, this class is a unique program, which supports highly-skilled internationally-trained engineering professionals as they transition into the Canadian job market.
- Expected outcomes and deliverables
-
1. A written detailed report of 30 to 40 pages will be submitted by the Project Team at the end of 8th week. The project plans will reference the Project Charter, Scope Statement, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) , and other information that will be relevant to each specific project or industry.
2. A presentation summarizing the project plan, and highlighting any key considerations. The organization (industry partner) is invited to attend.
Project Examples
Work with us to develop a plan for a new or ongoing project or initiative. Our program participants in teams of 4-5 will work with you to gather the data needed, using your project objectives, timelines, budget and resource requirements to create a successful project management plan.
Example projects include, but are not limited to:
- Plan for a sustainable architecture and ecological design that protect and enhance the environment for Oshawa South.
- Plan to construct a pipeline from Toronto to Sarnia for transporting oil from Toronto Harbour.
- Plan for design and construction of a daycare centre in North York near the subway.
- Plan for retrofitting a water treatment plant that has been under-performing.
- Plan for providing renewable solar energy to a hamlet in Nunavut.
- Plan for energy management for a facility
Due to the duration of the program (8 weeks), the program participants will not be executing the project tasks. You will, however, be presented a road-map, a project management plan report with outlines that you can implement to execute the project successfully.
Project participants:
- Represent a variety of disciplines within the engineering sector (such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, telecom, chemical, oil & gas, industrial, environmental, etc.) with different specializations including, but not limited to designing, consulting, planning, construction, operations, quality management,
- Have at least five years of experience in the engineering sector, with minimum 2 years of leading and directing projects
- Are highly trained and educated, with over 50% having completed graduate studies.
- By attending this Project Management Program, participants enhance their knowledge of the Canadian project management environment and work place culture. They also satisfy the PMP certificate requirement of 35 hours of Project Management education and plan to sit for their PMP exam in the next 6 months.
- Recent graduates have been hired by Crosslinx, EllisDon, Stantec, Infrastructure Ontario, Schneider Electric, Johnson Control, OLGC in positions such as Utilities Coordinator, Project Coordinator, Project Manager, Project Engineer and Contract Administrator.
- Project participants will require the following information from your company: project description/ scope, high level project scope, duration, assumptions/ constraints, applicable by-laws and regulations, operating procedures/ policies, visuals, competitors, risks, and company objectives.
ACCES Employment is a non-profit organization that through its Engineering Connections program helps internationally-trained engineering professionals launch their careers in Canada.
