Overview
Learner goals and capabilities

Placements offer an opportunity for students to get on-the-job experience before beginning their careers. Our placements are five weeks, full-time (40 hours) and unpaid. Field placement is a for-credit course in our program, and as such, is exempt under the Employment Standards Act. As well, students are covered under Centennial’s insurance policy for the length of their placement. The student works as an active member of your team for the entirety of their placement and has no other courses at that time.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables that a student might be responsible for on placement include

  • Presentations, trainings, and eLearning courses
  • SEO web copy including product descriptions and blog posts
  • Social media content calendars and active management of social media accounts
  • Proposals and applications
  • Research and reports
  • User guides and how-to pieces for internal and external audiences
Project Examples

Students can work on communications projects of any kind:

  • Web copywriting
  • Technical writing
  • Proposal writing
  • Writing for social media
  • Content marketing
  • Presentations and speech writing
  • Content management
  • Information design and data visualization
  • Digital storytelling
Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

One person in your organization is asked to act in a liaison role between the company and the College, and to be both a sponsor and guide for the student. This representative will have the chance to review the students’ resumes, conduct interviews, and have input in which student best fits the needs of the company.

Around the fourth or fifth week of placement, an evaluation form is circulated to the students. The student discusses this evaluation with the company supervisor and they agree on its contents. (Because the marks will be required prior to completion of the field placement, the evaluation should be completed during the fourth or fifth week of the field placement, not at the end.)
