My experience with Insanity CORR was organized. I was provided with clear objectives and expectations for a game designer on their game. The onboarding process was very seamless and I enjoyed meeting the rest of the CORR team. I was promptly given an essential task on the project after our first meeting. As a student brought on for a co-op opportunity, I was provided with feedback regularly every week from both my peers and the leads. This provided me with multiple learning opportunities and encouraged collaboration between fellow students. Ultimately, this led to appreciation between peers and further networking opportunities as I went to the GDC (Game Developer Conference) this year.

Great project to work on, and the team is invested in helping students learn and build on the skills they need for future careers. Noticed a few problems with overall communication and organization due to working with a large group, but individual feedback and support were good as I worked through my tasks.

A lot of people to engage with and a lot of opportunities to learn new techniques and workflows. I was tasked with building 3D asset and doing UV Unwraps and over the course of development I was able to learn a lot of shortcuts and tools to speed up my production workflow and improve the quality of my modeling. Sometimes it can get pretty busy and communication can be a bit hectic with all the teams and team leads, but any time I was unsure about a task or a topic covered at a meeting the leadership at Insanity Corr were always available to talk to me about getting back on track.

I was hired on as a gameplay and AI programmer for their game project. I felt that working with the other programmers on the team generally went really well and all were very open to help and suggestions. One thing I applaud as a change from when I started was the use of feature branches and pull requests, as they prevented issues we were having before. I would recommend that the company tries to make a weekly (or even daily) build of the game as a part of the DevOps principles in order to have smaller and more testable steps. The main issue I had while working with the company was tasks not clearly being defined towards the beginning and not knowing if I was making the right thing or not without having to ask for extremely explicit detail, and the awkward times for the meetings. This is currently being remedied (I believe) by adding a GDD. Finally, towards the beginning when deadlines were strict for the Ubisoft Indie Series, things often got a little heated which made me uncomfortable. This is understandable because of the stressful nature of everything involved, but I wanted to call attention to it. Overall, working for them was a good experience and they really do care about each individual member of the team a lot, I believe that this will provide not only me but everyone involved with excellent opportunities in the future and it was a pleasure to work with them!

The concept for the project overall is really fun and working on this game allowed for a lot of unique opportunities. This project allowed me a lot of opportunities to refine my workflow even further, and was great to have worked on a game with an official commercial store page. The team has been very supportive of all of the contractors, looking for ways to get us all the experiences we need to build our portfolios, which is great to see. The biggest issues I took were the organization of the team, lack of clarity in terms of planned features, that being if they were planned ahead in the first place, and the inconsistency in terms of those features being changed. There were multiple occasions where I would be working on something, only to find out later that the design for it had changed completely, or times where there would be a new feature that was not discussed at all until I would find out from someone else on the team that it exists. A lot of this could be remedied by a lot of preproduction work before the work on the project picks up, or in this case where it's in the middle of production, clearly defining everything wanted for the game, its implementation, functionality, etc. all in an easy to access location, like in a game design document that we all have access to early on. Meetings often were extended longer than they should have due to discussions about features that a lot of the time could have been resolved beforehand in preproduction or with a thoroughly designed GDD. For my field in particular, it felt as though not much thought was put into it beforehand, resulting in myself needing to essentially start from scratch in that area, which especially for the first major milestone of the demo release on Steam, put significant stress and work on me to ensure it was up to the quality myself and the team were happy with in an extremely short time. Asking the contractors and each individual team what they needed to be successful would have been a great move that could have remedied these issues fairly early on. Overall, I do find that the organization and planning of the team have both improved since the start of this contract, although the wider issues are still present unfortunately. If the team continues to iterate and improve their workflows and planning of features, I can see a great level of success being achievable.
