Learner goals and capabilities

Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on students from Saskatchewan Polytechnic to be your student-consultants, in a project-based experience. Students will work on one main project over the course of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

Students in this course learn to create a complete Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) Human MachineInterface (HMI) application, building on their skills from a previous entry level course in this area.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables are negotiable, and will seek to align the needs of the students and the organization.

Some final project deliverables might include:

  1. A 10-15 minute presentation on key findings and recommendations
  2. A detailed report including their research, analysis, insights and recommendations

Project Examples

Students in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.

Project activities that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  • 1. Create a digital value from a Programmable Logic Control (PLC) and display it on a local SCADA computer.
  • 2. Create an analog value from a Programmable Logic Control (PLC) and display it on a local SCADA computer.
  • 3. Create digital and analog value of a remote Programmable Logic Control (PLC) from a local SCADA computer.
  • 4. Evaluate the use of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) block within the Programmable Logic Control (PLC).
  • 5. Create a complete SCADA application (Human Machine Interface) to acquire remote data and control a remote station.

Examples of projects students have previously completed:

1. Airport Luggage System

  • The arrival of luggage at the airport and transporting it to the correct terminal so that it arrives with the traveler

2. Automated Grain Dryer Systems

  • In the process of drying grain for storage can be broken down into three main procedures: filling, drying, and emptying for storage. Each part has been broken down to explain the process of each along with the math and designed required sensors to make the system operate efficiently and effectively.

3. Manufacturing of Pipeline SCADA control system

  • The goal of this project was to combine student work term experience with SCADA (Scada control and Data Acquisition) course and design a functional manufacturing Line for Pipeline. The manufacturing line has different operations like Forming, Welding & Flying cut. These operations are important to give a Flat coil into desired length of pipe shape.
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

A representative of the company will be available to answer questions from students in a timely manner for the duration of the project.

A representative of the company will be available for a pre-selection discussion with the administrator of the course to review the project scope.
